Hi!
I'm Tia Tom, an engineering graduate, a teacher, a mentor, a sister and a friend. I'm also the founder of Marteine.
In Béria, Marteine (pronounced mar-taine) means 'the weight of two women in one'. I founded Marteine as an homage to my maternal grandmother, who was lovingly nicknamed Marteine due to her impenetrable strength and resiliency.
Having lived in the Banff-Ledbury (Ottawa, ON) area for several years, I have seen first-hand the positive impact that our local homework club has had on the neighborhood kids. However, due to COVID-19, this invaluable community resource is no longer available, this loss is quite unfortunate. Homework clubs have the ability to help a student believe in themselves, and when a person believes in themselves, there is no limit to what they can accomplish.
That's why I started Marteine - to bring back the magic of homework club in a remotely accessible form for those in need. Marteine collaborates closely with community organizations and school boards to provide a platform for high-school students to access 1-on-1 homework and academic support. Our tutors are professionals and university students!
Furthermore, we are working in collaboration with an Ontario Certified Teacher serving on the board to make sure our content and processes are accurate and reflective of students’ current curriculums.
Our service is focused on helping middle and high school students, simply because they are at a pivotal stage in life. We believe that enabling them to make good choices right now will help them succeed later on in life.
I am looking forward to working with you now and in the future!
*Beria: is a language spoken by an ethnic group called '“Zaghawa” in Chad, geographically located in Central Africa. Chad is a beautiful country that is rich in culture and natural beauty. Marteine is derived from the Arabo-Chadian dialect “Mara-tinene”.

Hello!
My name’s Rayyan and I’m a recent graduate of the Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry programs at uOttawa. During my undergrad, I had the pleasure of working with different community organizations around the campus and city, which ignited my passion for working with the community and empowering our youth.
As a TA, I got to see how much schooling during the pandemic has impacted students learning, and how students could benefit from smaller and one-on-one sessions to better understand the world around them from a scientific lens, which is why working with Marteine is such a wonderful opportunity to help youth who may not have the same resources as their peers.
